Statement on the Meeting on the Right to the City, November 2014

Building a global platform to address the Right to the City’s agenda took prominence in last November’s International Meeting on Rights of the City held in Sane Paulo, Brazil.

The meeting highlighted participation plans for individuals, institutions, organizations, forums and networks in driving inequalities brought about by the accelerated urbanization in cities across the world. Involvement by these minority groups will greatly support the Right to the City’s themes, key principles and indicators. Participation towards the Global Platform Action plan was outlined and made available in four key areas namely:

  • Forms of Incidence of the Global Platform on the Right to the City
  • Research, Training and Capacity Building on the Right to the City
  • Communication, Raising-awareness and Cultural Dimension of Global Platform on the Right to the City
  • Articulation and Alliances of the Global Platform on the Right to the City

Open to institutions, organizations, forums and networks committed to development of the Global Platform on the Right to the City, the Global Action plan is crucial in strengthening local and urban struggle particularly to influence definition process of the Sustainable Development Goals Post-2015.

The meeting, which brought together over 158 participants and 104 institutions and organizations, also addressed women safety in the city, current urban conflicts and implementation prospects of right to the city.

The goals of the Global Platform on the Right to the City go a long way towards achieving justice for minority groups across the globe.
